She popped the trunk. She had to have something inside to
restrain him. She pulled out a pair of heavy-duty jumper cables and strolled
around to his side again.
“You gonna jumpstart me? I assure you, I don’t need a
jumpstart.”
She resisted laughing. For someone who thought they were
going to be killed, he sure made an awful lot of jokes.
Carefully, watchful of his dangerous, powerful legs, she
pressed her palms on his thighs and held him steady while she tied his feet
with the thick cords.
“You really are a dominatrix, aren’t you? I’m not usually
into that stuff, but okay.”
“Shut up.”
He faked a quiver. “Oohsay it again.”

If you’ve read Creatus Book One, I’m sure you know these two characters. I hope you enjoyed the excerpt I chose and will look forward to their story. In the meanwhile, please get me those cover ideas. Y’all did an awesome job last time, so let’s do it again!

Spoiler Alert!!!

~ Excerpt ~
Deciding she needed exercise, she took the stairs to Derrick’s rooftop.

The wispy clouds she’d spied earlier had scattered, leaving a star-speckled canvas above her. She breathed in the cool night air and took off in a sprint across the top of the roof. The next building over was about ten
stories lower than this one. Luckily, she’d worn dark jeans and a black tank beneath her coat, so she didn’t stand out against the ink-black sky.

She hit the lower rooftop running, scattering up bits of gravel and dust, as she made for the other side. She’d made this run before, the night Kristina had gone missing
and she’d been trying to find Michael—the night she met Reece Buckley.
She leaped onto two more buildings, her breaths coming quicker, filling the air around her with white billowy puffs. Systematically,
she made a wide arc around Back Bay, skirting the Charles River, and then
making her way back to her car.

If you’ve read Creatus Book One, I’m sure you know this character. I hope you enjoyed the excerpt I chose and will look forward to book two.

The reason we believe in fairy tales—and monsters.

Feeling her gaze burning through him, he cast a glimpse in her direction.
“You’rereal,” she finally sputtered, a quiver in her voice as she touched his arm.
“You’re flesh and blood.”
Huffing out a chuckle at her words, he attempted to contain the nervousness of her accusation, as if she’d discerned there was something unusual about him. He didn’t look any different from any other twenty-eight-year-old male.
He’d always assumed that once they met, he could convince her that she’d been mistaken as a child when she told the police officer that her dark angel had saved her. “Of course I’m real,” he said, attempting to add enough conviction behind his words so she
wouldn’t question him further.

CREATUS - Final Front Cover

In every myth there is a modicum of truth…

Creatus, the reason we believe in fairy tales–and monsters.

In my new novel, for the first time ever, I deleted the prologue and the first chapter and jumped right into the story, but I do love prologues, as I know many of my readers do as well, so I couldn’t part with it.

Instead, I’m going to give you a first peek at my new novel, and a little insight to the above scene. I hope you enjoy.

Creatus

Prologue

Kristina cowered against the damp building, looking to her mother for direction. Even at eight, she could see the wild gleam in the man’s eyes.

Pepper spray in hand, her mother pushed her toward the street. “Run, baby!”

A knife glinted in the man’s hand as he held it up in front of him. “I just want the jewelry and your money, lady. Don’t make me hurt you or the kid.”

Her mother took her eyes off him for a fraction of a second. “Run, Kris—” Her words cut off as the man slammed the knife into her mother’s chest and then reached for Kristina, but she ran as her mother had instructed. As she fled, she heard her mother’s cries. How could she have left her, especially when it was all her fault? She stopped in the middle of the street. She had to stop him. Her legs felt heavy and sluggish as she ran back down the alley toward the mugger, tears blurring her vision.

A silhouette of a man landed in front of her with a soft thump. When he stood up, a sliver of light from the street revealed that he was dressed in black and much larger than the guy who’d attacked them. An anguished scream shredded the air as the new man tore the thug off her mother, slamming him into the concrete. He knelt down over her mother, checking where the man had forced the knife, but she didn’t move. The kind man lifted her to her feet and she stumbled forward.

“Mommy!” Kristina screamed, seeing the blood drip from her mother’s mouth and seep through a rip in her dress.

Her mother’s eyes and mouth opened, but nothing came out.

“Go,” the man in black shouted. His voice was deep and strong, his eyes dark as he turned to the man on the ground and pulled him up by his hair.

Kristina wrapped her arms around her mother’s waist, doing her best to hold her upright. As they staggered away, one lone wail filled the air and then silence. She hoped it was the bad guy, not the one in black. Normally his dark hair and mysteriously deep eyes would scare her, but she’d felt safe when he looked at her, as if he knew her.

Her mother collapsed in her arms. The blood had soaked through her dress, turning it bright red.

She looked back to the alley where the mugger had pushed them off the sidewalk. They’d just been going to get ice cream. “Help me,” she pleaded to the man who’d saved her. He was leaning over the bad guy, his fingers touching his neck. “My mother’s dying…”

The man in black looked up at the sound of her cry, but didn’t move. “I’m sorry. There’s nothing I can do.”

She blinked the tears out of her eyes, and he was gone.

What’s a Creatus?

Creatus-4SquareWithout giving away anything about my new series, as that is part of the pleasure of reading a new book, I’d like to share with you what Creatus aren’t instead of what they are. And why I felt the need to share their story.

I enjoy reading almost all genres, but one of my favorites is a little-known genre called magical realism. I love when an author can take normal characters who live and work among us, but then give me insight on what makes their character special and why they have a story to tell in the first place.

Whether it’s about psychic abilities, soul changing, or even paranormal activity, the key for me is that it’s believable–or at least plausible in some sense.

Since the beginning of the written word, storytellers have shared myths about supernatural beings. However, over the centuries, these supernatural beings have morphed into tales of vampires, werewolves, and superheroes that are so outlandish I find it hard to pay attention, let alone believe.

Don’t get me wrong; I still enjoy a well-written story about vampires and mythical creatures, but I crave a reason to believe. I want some reasonable basis for the story.

The idea of a person shifting into an animal form that’s ten times the size of its human form, or a person having the ability to fly without the required body mechanics, makes little sense to me. But, I can’t discount that since biblical days, stories have amassed about sentient beings with superhuman strength.

CREATUS, from the Latin word meaning created, are the reason we believe in fairy tales—and monsters. Superheroes didn’t come about by being bitten by a vampire, a werewolf, or a spider. Instead, perhaps the same superior being who created us created them. So to answer everyone’s question… “What’s a creatus?” Well, a creatus is…a creatus. 🙂

That’s all I can say for now. If you love enough supernatural in your romantic-suspense novel to make you say, “Hmm…” Prepare to believe…

Social media has brought back ‘word of mouth’ advertising! #AmReading #AmSharing Books!

Image

Remember when we used to have to wait to see our friends in school to tell all of them about something exciting that happened at the skating rink Friday night. Yeah, we could have called on our landline, but how long would it have taken to retell the story ten times or more, depending on how many friends you had?

With social media, we can tell all of our closest friends something. I still don’t recommend talking about extremely personal situations. But hey, remember when you read ‘Flowers in the Attic’. Yikes! I do. I still have nightmares. I remember sitting around the school lunch table discussing our favorite books, a new band, and Rick Springfield from General Hospital. Am I showing my age yet? Even if you’re twenty years younger than I am, you still can identify with this, as social media really didn’t start hopping until the last ten years.

Since the beginning of time, ‘word of mouth’ advertising has been one of the most reliable sources consumers have had when purchasing goods or services. But with ‘The Big Screen’, Billboards, TV, and Radio, good old-fashioned ‘word of mouth’ has been overshadowed. And yes, all these outlets still exist, but they aren’t the most powerful anymore.

Sure, those other channels can still tell you about the best thing since sliced bread, but then what will you do? If you’re like my family, you go straight to the Internet.

Social media has brought back ‘word of mouth’ advertising with a vengeance!

Twitter, Facebook, Blogger, and other Internet sites are the most effective form of ‘word of mouth’ advertising—EVER!

Yeah…we socialize, but almost all of us use social media to share our favorite music, movies, TV shows, books, and even designer clothes and accessories. One of the best forms of advertising has slipped into the new millennium. Unlike when I was a teenager, ‘word of mouth’ travels almost as fast as lightning. Heck, we even knew OBL was no longer alive before authorities could verify the details.

So that’s my ‘writing blog’. Now, let’s get on to the good stuff!

Because I still happen to believe ‘word of mouth’ is the best advertising, I am reaching out to my friends to spread the word. I know I can’t do it without you, so I decided to come up with a way to let you earn rewards for spreading the word. Remember that old advertisement: “And they’ll tell two friends, and they’ll tell two friends…” I don’t even remember what it was about, but I know it works!

So…from now until the end of the year, I am going to run an ongoing monthly contest. That way everyone has an opportunity to win. In other words, an entry in September could still win in December. Also, since you can enter by referring and/or being referred, it benefits everyone. Last thing I want to do is alienate my current friends. Nope. I just want to meet new friends! But, and I hope you will think this is fair, I am going to limit one win per household per this contest.

I think you all know how to use Raffle Copter by now, but if not, just leave a note in the comment section, and I or one of my friends will help you.

I’m giving you several ways to win, so enter as many times as you want. On the first day of the month of October, November, December, and January, I will have Raffle Copter choose a winner for a $50 Amazon gift card. The winner will be notified, and as soon as they verify their email, the prize will be sent. If you’ve played my contests before, you know I’m good about sending gifts out the same day.

So read on in the Raffle Copter for all the ways you can register to win. I tried to be creative so have fun and good luck!

In every myth there is a modicum of truth…

Creatus

The reason we believe in fairy tales—and monsters.

For my sample this Sunday, I will be using a never before seen book description that gives you a little insight on Creatus.

Kristina knows he exists. She witnessed his supernatural strength when he saved her life and his sorrow when he failed to save her mother. She knows he watches over her from a distance. And she will do whatever it takes to get his attention, even throw herself off the highest bridge in Boston to force him out of the shadows.

Derrick is one of the creatus, created beings who have been on earth more than four thousand years. Many questions surround the origin of these sentient beings who are stronger than humans, eat differently, and live longer. But they were created just as we were, maybe even before us. It is from them we obtain our fairy tales—and our nightmares. They are the reason we believe in superheroes—and monsters. Becausethey exist.

In the past, they kept the human race safe from an anonymous distance. But now Derrick must come out of the darkness to save a woman he has no business loving, even if doing so may threaten his entire race.

Creatus is a new romantic-suspense novel with a supernatural edge that answers the myths and fairy tales you’ve heard about preternatural sentient beings. Prepare yourself to believe.

As the sun’s rays peeked above the horizon, lighting the abyss below her, she inhaled a deep breath, closed her eyes, and jumped. She didn’t scream; she didn’t look down. As much as she hated her life, she hoped it wouldn’t end this way. She’d really like to see him one more time.

Her life didn’t flash before her eyes as she’d always heard. Just an image of her mother covered in blood and her Dark Angel telling her he was sorry.
