As an author, I’ve learned that no matter what you write, how you describe what you wrote, or what other reviewers commented about what you wrote, there will still be readers who don’t get it.
Just one of my many book descriptions: Ancient myths, superheroes, vampires… Forget everything you’ve heard.
Review: “The description of this book makes you think that its (her misspelling, not mine) about vampires…”
Review: “I think this book has potential to be popular but it just is not my type of book – too vampire/alien-ish for me.”
Yes, those two reviews were from the same book, and they were back to back. LOL!
Definition of a Vampire: a preternatural being that is said to suck the blood…
My thoughts… Since the beginning of the written word, storytellers have shared myths about supernatural beings. So, I did tons and tons of research about vampires, superheroes, and other myths, since they all share common traits, and I wanted to tell a story based on what seemed logical to me.
Personally, I love magical realism. I am a reader, and I want to believe. In order for me to believe, though, the story has to follow scientific laws. The idea of a person shifting into an animal form that’s ten times the size of its human form, or a person having the ability to fly without the required body mechanics, makes little sense to me. And in order for a body to function–corpse or not–it has to have a heart that pumps life-giving blood through its veins. But, I can’t discount that since biblical days, stories have amassed about sentient beings with superhuman strength. So…
CREATUS, from the Latin word meaning “created” are the reason we believe in fairy tales—and monsters. Superheroes didn’t come about from being bitten by a vampire, a werewolf, or a spider. Instead, perhaps the same superior being who created us created them.

In every myth there is a modicum of truth…
Creatus, the reason we believe in fairy tales–and monsters.
In my new novel, for the first time ever, I deleted the prologue and the first chapter and jumped right into the story, but I do love prologues, as I know many of my readers do as well, so I couldn’t part with it.
Instead, I’m going to give you a first peek at my new novel, and a little insight to the above scene. I hope you enjoy.

Prologue
Kristina cowered against the damp building, looking to her mother for direction. Even at eight, she could see the wild gleam in the man’s eyes.
Pepper spray in hand, her mother pushed her toward the street. “Run, baby!”
A knife glinted in the man’s hand as he held it up in front of him. “I just want the jewelry and your money, lady. Don’t make me hurt you or the kid.”
Her mother took her eyes off him for a fraction of a second. “Run, Kris—” Her words cut off as the man slammed the knife into her mother’s chest and then reached for Kristina, but she ran as her mother had instructed. As she fled, she heard her mother’s cries. How could she have left her, especially when it was all her fault? She stopped in the middle of the street. She had to stop him. Her legs felt heavy and sluggish as she ran back down the alley toward the mugger, tears blurring her vision.
A silhouette of a man landed in front of her with a soft thump. When he stood up, a sliver of light from the street revealed that he was dressed in black and much larger than the guy who’d attacked them. An anguished scream shredded the air as the new man tore the thug off her mother, slamming him into the concrete. He knelt down over her mother, checking where the man had forced the knife, but she didn’t move. The kind man lifted her to her feet and she stumbled forward.
“Mommy!” Kristina screamed, seeing the blood drip from her mother’s mouth and seep through a rip in her dress.
Her mother’s eyes and mouth opened, but nothing came out.
“Go,” the man in black shouted. His voice was deep and strong, his eyes dark as he turned to the man on the ground and pulled him up by his hair.
Kristina wrapped her arms around her mother’s waist, doing her best to hold her upright. As they staggered away, one lone wail filled the air and then silence. She hoped it was the bad guy, not the one in black. Normally his dark hair and mysteriously deep eyes would scare her, but she’d felt safe when he looked at her, as if he knew her.
Her mother collapsed in her arms. The blood had soaked through her dress, turning it bright red.
She looked back to the alley where the mugger had pushed them off the sidewalk. They’d just been going to get ice cream. “Help me,” she pleaded to the man who’d saved her. He was leaning over the bad guy, his fingers touching his neck. “My mother’s dying…”
The man in black looked up at the sound of her cry, but didn’t move. “I’m sorry. There’s nothing I can do.”
She blinked the tears out of her eyes, and he was gone.
After years of searching for the mysterious stranger who saved her life, twenty-two-year-old Kristina is alone and desperate. Seeing no future in her worthless existence, she attempts to force her protector out of the shadows the only way she knows—killing herself.
Ignoring his family’s disapproval, Derrick continues to safeguard the girl he rescued from a vicious attack years earlier. The one thing he can’t protect her from, however, is herself. When Kristina jumps off a bridge, he must reveal himself, even if saving her means she will now be in danger from his kind.
To make things worse, a video revealing Derrick’s supernatural ability when he saved Kristina is now in the possession of a government agency, and someone in his family will do anything to keep their existence a secret, even kill Kristina, the woman Derrick can no longer live without.
